Zero Tolerance Policy for Sexual Harassment and Assault (SASH)

At Johnston Institute, we are committed to creating and maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning and working environment. We have a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of sexual assault and sexual harassment (SASH). This means that such behaviour is never acceptable under any circumstances, and the Institute will take immediate and appropriate action when incidents are reported.

Our Commitment

  • Sexual harassment, sexual assault, intimidation, or any unwelcome sexual conduct will not be tolerated.

  • Every member of our community – students, staff, contractors, and visitors – has the right to feel safe and respected.

  • All disclosures are taken seriously and handled with sensitivity, fairness, and confidentiality.

  • Support services, including trained First Responders, counselling, and referral to external support, are available to those affected.

What is Considered SASH?

Examples of behaviour that fall under sexual assault or harassment include:

  • Unwanted sexual touching or advances

  • Unwelcome requests for sexual favours

  • Offensive jokes, comments, or messages of a sexual nature

  • Displaying sexually explicit material

  • Pressuring someone into sexual activity

  • Rape or attempted rape

  • Non-consensual sharing of intimate images

For more details, please refer to the full SASH Policy.

Reporting and Support

If you experience, witness, or become aware of sexual harassment or assault:

  • You can make a disclosure at any time to a trained First Responder (staff member specially trained to handle SASH matters).

  • Disclosures can be made in writing, in person, or anonymously.

  • With your consent, support may include counselling, changes to study or work arrangements, or contacting the police if required.

  • The Institute may also act if safety risks to the community are identified, even in the case of anonymous disclosures.

Confidentiality and Safety

All disclosures are managed confidentially. The rights of both the discloser (person reporting) and the respondent (person accused) are respected. Safety measures may be put in place during any investigation to protect the well-being of all parties involved.

Prevention and Education

  • All students and staff must complete SASH awareness training.

  • SASH awareness and reporting procedures are covered in student orientation, staff induction, and ongoing workshops.

  • Professional boundaries are strictly maintained in all staff-student interactions.

Consequences

Confirmed incidents of sexual assault or harassment may result in:

  • Termination of enrolment (for students)

  • Termination of employment or engagement (for staff or contractors)

  • Referral to police and/or legal authorities for further action
