Getting Started: Student Orientation
Welcome to Johnston Institute! Orientation is the most important first step in your academic journey. It is designed to prepare you to successfully, safely, and confidently commence your course.
Please note: Attendance at Orientation is compulsory for all commencing domestic and international students. If you are approved for late enrolment and miss the main orientation week, you will be required to complete a condensed orientation program early in the semester.
What to Expect During Orientation
Orientation week is packed with interactive sessions, workshops, and social activities. During the program, you will:
-
Academic Preparation: Learn about your course structure, assessment expectations, and academic integrity (including our policies on plagiarism, referencing, and the ethical use of Generative AI).
- Systems Training: Get hands-on training for logging into the Student Portal, accessing your student email, and navigating our Learning Management System (LMS).
- Campus & Facilities: Take a guided tour of our Melbourne CBD campus, locate emergency exits, study lounges, library resources, and administrative offices.
Support Services: Meet the teams dedicated to your success, including Academic Support, Student Wellbeing, and Counselling. We will also introduce you to external services like Victoria Legal Aid.
International Student Orientation
For our international students joining us in Australia, we hold dedicated sessions to help you transition smoothly to studying and living in Melbourne. We will cover critical regulatory and lifestyle information, including:
-
Visa Obligations: Understanding your student visa (subclass 500) conditions, including full-time enrolment, academic progress, and attendance requirements.
- Working in Australia: Your work rights and limitations, plus how to resolve workplace issues through the Fair Work Ombudsman.
- Health & Protection: How to manage your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and your rights under the Tuition Protection Service (TPS).
- Living in Melbourne: Guidance on personal safety, using public transport (Myki), understanding Australian culture, and accessing the Study Melbourne Student Centre.
Safety, Respect, and Wellbeing
At Johnston Institute, your safety and dignity are our highest priorities. During Orientation, we will clearly outline your rights and responsibilities under the Student Code of Conduct. You will receive comprehensive information on emergency contacts, reporting hazards, and our zero-tolerance policies regarding bullying, racism, and sexual harassment (SASH).
